The manufacturing process of automotive spark plugs begins with the selection of a spark plug's insulator. Initially, the spark plug was made from mica, which was prone to lead deposits. The material was eventually replaced by sintered alumina, which is more effective at maintaining the proper temperature and mechanical strength in high-temperature conditions. Since its introduction in the early 1980s, this new type of spark plug has become the industry standard.

A spark plug is made of two components: the hex head (where a socket wrench fits) and the gasket (the seat). The first is the one that seals the plug to the cylinder head; the other is the gasket. In some cars, a spark plug with a seat has a tapered seat that sits flush against the cylinder head. This style is used in cars with iron cylinder heads, while the ones without a gasket have a flat seat.

The second component is the insulator, which is made of platinum or iridium. Unlike copper, the latter is more expensive, but it is better for the environment. Copper-based insulators are typically the cheapest and least expensive. Copper electrodes wear out quickly, usually requiring replacement after 20, 000 miles, and they are also the cheapest.
